Sold for $106.5 million

Nude, Green Leaves and Bust is an oil-on-canvas painting by Pablo Picasso. The painting features his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. The canvas is 1.5m tall and looks beautiful with the vibrant blue and lilac canvas. The painting was sold to Leonard Blavatnik at Christie’s in New York city on May 4,2010. The winning bid was taken via telephone for $95 million. The price reached $106.5 million including the buyer’s premium.


The Scream

Sold for $119.9 million

The Scream is the popular name given to the four versions of the paintings created by Edvard Munch. The fourth version (pastel) was sold for a whooping 1.2 million dollars on 2 May 2012 to Leon Black.The Scream has been the target for several high-profile art thefts. The other versions of the paintings are displayed on National Gallery in Oslo and Munch Museum.

Sold for $142.4 million

Three Studies of Lucian Freud is an oil-on-canvas painting by Francis Bacon. This painting depicts Bacon’s friend and artistic rival Lucian Freud. The painting was sold for a record price of 142.4 million dollars on 12 Nov 2013 to Elaine Wynn, ex-wife of Steve Wynn at the Christie’s New York auction house. It held the record for the most expensive painting sold at an auction for nearly 1.5 years.


Nu Couché

Sold for $170.4 million

Nu Couche, which means Reclining Nude is a nude portrait painted by Amedeo Modigliani in 1917. The painting for sold for 170.4 million dollars during an auction held at Christie’s New York on 9 November 2015. The purchaser is Liu Yiqian, a Chinese businessman and art collector. He has a net worth of US$1.38 billion.


Les Femmes d’Alger (“Version O”)

Sold for $179.4 million

Women of Algiers is the English translation for Les Femmes d’Alger. It is a series of 15 paintings by Pablo Picasso who was inspired by the 1834 painting “The women of Algiers in their Apartment“. The “Version O” is the last painting in the series and was sold for $31.9 million back in 1997. “Version O” was auctioned for a second time in May 2015 during which it earned the title for the world’s most expensive painting sold at auction. The painting was sold to the former Qatari prime minister, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani for a record price of 179.4 million dollars.
